Proud to support:
Canine Companions for Independence is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships.
Headquartered in Santa Rosa, CA, Canine Companions is the largest non-profit provider of assistance dogs, and is recognized worldwide for the excellence of its dogs, and the quality and longevity of the matches it makes between dogs and people. The result is a life full of increased independence and loving companionship.
Tony Sprout, ITG supervisor of field services, is a volunteer dog trainer for Canine Companions in Ohio.
Tony spends 12 to 16 months training a dog. When the dog is fully trained (with some 30 to 40 commands), the dogs are paired with adults and children with disabilities. The adult or child has to go through a week of orientation and training with the dog. If all goes well during the orientation, the dogs graduate and provide on-going assistance to their new owners.
From time to time, Tony has had his companion dog drive along in the ITG service van. One joined him all the way to Lake Charles, Louisiana.
